Product Review: Better Batter Gluten Free Flour & Mixes

Screen Shot 2014-03-09 at 9.39.45 PMBetter Batter Gluten Free Flour is the brainchild of Naomi Poe.  Naomi’s oldest son was diagnosed with low functioning autism. Because he seemed to be in pain and was unable to communicate, despite intensive speech and other therapies, and because he seemed to be growing physically sicker each day, Naomi engaged her pediatrician to help find out what could be causing his symptoms.

Naomi’s doctor, having just come from a class about celiac disease, suggested that perhaps gluten intolerance was the issue behind his health problems. Sure enough, testing revealed that he was suffering from celiac disease. Three weeks on the gluten free diet were enough to cause an huge improvement in her son’s health. A few years later her second son was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance.

Naomi, like most of us, started baking her own breads and goodies, using the information and recipes available at the time. In 2006, there really wasn’t anything out there, and in April of 2006, Naomi was just plain tired of paying too much for mixes that required additional special ingredients, didn’t work, or tasted plain weird.

She wanted a flour that would work in her mom’s old recipes, look right, and taste right. After many attempts, Naomi came up with a gluten free flour. Now, better batter offers a full line of mixes and protein bars.

The kind folks over at Better Batter recently sent me a sample pack of their gluten free flours and mixes.

The Better Batter line of products include:

All Purpose Flour
Chocolate Cake Mix
Yellow Cake Mix
Fudge Brownie Mix
Pancake & Biscuit Mix
Seasoned Flour

The cake and brownie mixes offer Lower Fat Vegan Instructions. Rather than using eggs, butter, etc., the recipes call for soda, beans, or pumpkin.

The first thing I made was, of course, the Fudge Brownie. Mix These brownies bake up chewy, fudgy, and so full of chocolate goodness. To quote Better Batter’s, “Calling all chocoholics! We dare you to find a richer, more fudgy, moister fudge brownie than this decadent mix!” And that is exactly what it is! Even Jeremy was super impressed with these brownies. But if you are more of a cake-like brownie lover, don’t worry, Better Batter provides baking directions for this also. The low fat vegan version is made with white beans and is just as fudgy. I know, because that is what I made.IMG_6847

Better Batter Seasoned Flour is as simple to use for frying and baking as traditional flour. Blending more than ten herbs and spices, the seasoning gives gluten free fried and breaded foods a great flavor, with a nice little kick. And it’s not too heavy! IMG_6848 IMG_6850 IMG_6851

Better Batter All Purpose Flour is a mix of rice flour, brown rice flour, tapioca starch, potato starch, potato flour, xanthan gum and pectin. It is vegetarian/vegan and Kosher. What attracted me most to Better Batter is that it states cup for cup substitute for regular flour for most recipes.

Better Batter donates 10% of their net profits to social and charitable causes.

At Better Batter, they believe everyone should have the ability to eat healthy, enjoyable food. And gluten free foods are not always cheap. That’s why Better Batter is committed to offering special pricing to families with limited income, families with children with autism, college students and other households with extraordinary circumstances. Better Batter products are available for purchase in 42 states, with 7 retail locations in Massachusetts, and online. Although on the pricier side at $7.50 per mix, $0.75 is going to a charity. I love supporting local and small businesses, especially those that give back they way Better Batter does.

I've been on a gluten free diet since January 2009. It's been an adventure, and a challenge at times. I love to go to new restaurants and try new foods, and being gluten free can make eating out difficult at times. But I will not let my dietary restrictions get in my way of finding new restaurants and products. These are my stories of being a young women in a big city, eating out and trying new foods, all while NOT eating gluten. Like I said, it's an adventure and you are welcome to come along... Please note that as I try to eat gluten free 100% of the time, my intolerance is not as severe as others so please use caution when dining at restaurants that are not certified gluten free.
