Gluten Free Options at Osteria del Principe // Flatiron, NYC

logo@2x2

Osteria del Principe is the flagship store and first restaurant opened in the US by Principe di San Daniele, the world class prosciutto manufacturer. The family owned company has been making artisanal charcuterie, such as prosciutto di San Daniele, for over 60 years. Osteria del Principe allows you to really indulge in traditional Italian food in the heart of Manhatta’s Flatiron district.

They wanted to share their passion for Prosciutto and bring it directly to New Yorkers to let them experience the typical atmosphere of the Italian osteria: a welcoming and simple restaurant characterized by a large counter, with reasonably priced local specialties and great wines. A place where you can meet friends for a glass of wine and an appetizer of prosciutto and cheese. You can also share a dish of mixed cold cuts such as beechwood smoked ham, mortadella and truffle infused ham.

Osteria del Principe reminds me of being of being in Europe; the decor and atmosphere take me right back.

Although Osteria del Principe does not have a Gluten Free Menu, almost all of the menu items are in fact gluten free, or can be prepared gluten free. All of the cheese and charcuterie are gluten free. Of course the bread is not, so bring your own if you want to enjoy it the traditional way, or eat it without the bread.

All of the salads are gluten free, minus the croutons, and all of the appetizers, minus the tomato soup and bread are gluten free.

We were so full after dinner we walked home (just under 2 miles). The meal itself was very good and the portion sizes were big (did you see the size of my salmon?!), but the service left much to be desired.

I've been on a gluten free diet since January 2009. It's been an adventure, and a challenge at times. I love to go to new restaurants and try new foods, and being gluten free can make eating out difficult at times. But I will not let my dietary restrictions get in my way of finding new restaurants and products. These are my stories of being a young women in a big city, eating out and trying new foods, all while trying to NOT eat gluten. Like I said, it's an adventure and you are welcome to come along... Please note that as I try to eat gluten free 100% of the time, my intolerance is not as severe as others so please use caution when dining at restaurants that are not certified gluten free.
